Unfreedom: 1984 in Bush-Blair-land

By Lahai J Samboma

bob.jpgAs I watch the television news, read the various press and contemplate bloody, barbaric death and destruction unfolding seemingly unstoppably in the Zionist-imperialist battlefield that Lebanon and Palestine have become, the words of two of the 20th Century’s great wordsmiths come to mind: those of Robert Nesta Marley, aka Bob; and Eric Blair, more popularly known as George Orwell.

In his great anti-war song, Real Situation, singer-poet-philosopher Bob says:

“Nation fight against nation

Where did it all begin

Where will it end

Well it seems like total destruction’s the only solution

And there ain’t no use, no-one can stop them now

Total destruction’s the only solution.”

The total destruction we see being unleashed so ruthlessly is the handiwork of murderous and corrupt Marleyesque “baldheads” of the Zionist/neocon axis of evil. And how can you stop them, when those who have arrogated the moral high ground, viz the US and Britain, have given the green light to the Zionist entity to continue with the slaughter of innocents “until the job is done”.

Consider the claim that Israel is engaged in a fight for its very survival, “self-defence”; consider the role of the corporate mass media, in particular the lies and apologetics for crimes against humanity; look at the hypocrisy of a “civilised” world that allows this carnage to take place without even the teeniest whimper. If you know your Orwell, this is 1984 to a T.

orwell.jpg“Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defence against a homicidal maniac.”

We all know how this one started - and it’s certainly not a function of self defence. For years now a low-level conflict, a state of non-peace had been raging in the MidEast between Israel and the Palestinians, on one side, and between Israel and the Hizbolla freedom fighters, on the other. In reality, these are battles in the same war, one that has as its roots the dispossession of the Palestinians of their land, lives and livelihoods, and the desire of their Arab and Muslim brothers to aid them in their just struggle.

The immediate spark, it is claimed, is the abduction of two Zionist troops by the Hizbolla. That, however is bunkum. The immediate spark was the desire by the Zionists, and their sponsors in Washington, to use this instance of the continuum of low-level skirmishes to put in train their grand designs of pacifying once and for all popular resistance to Zionist expansionism and US control of the region’s energy resources.

The claim of Israel, a formidable military power with two hundred nuclear warheads, that their overwhelmingly disproportionate response to what were essentially pinpricks, is an insult to our intelligence. As is the claim that their adversaries are murderous, morally-depraved terrorists. This is not self defence; it is a war of aggression against innocent populations by an armed-to-the-teeth reactionary, racist, apartheid, land-grabbing regime whose ambitions are in convergence with those of a cranky, middle-aged imperial behemoth.

“Early in life I had noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper.”

lying is truth.jpgThis maxim of Orwell’s is one that contemporary society had better take to their hearts, if we are to counter the misinformation and disinformation being spewed out every passing day by the cheap harlots of mass media organisations.

Sometimes the lies can be quite obvious, such as the claim parroted for the past few weeks by the BBC, Sky, CNN and their paper counterparts, that Israel is only rightly defending itself against terrorists acting on behalf of Iran and Syria.

At other times, the lies, or “incorrect reportage”, are hidden in the way words and phrases are deployed in the propaganda war, not least in the way a group rooted in their people’s struggle against Zionist encroachment, is characterised as “terrorist”, while the aggressor, because they suffered a horrendous crime in the past for which the west feels guilt, are on the side of all that is right and righteous - even as the evidence of our eyes tells us otherwise. Orwell, bless him, did not overlook this.

“Thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”

For the conscious propagandist, the spin doctor, psy-ops operative or reporter, the use of “terrorist” as a description of the moralistic but powerless underdog fighting for his/her humanity against overwhelming odds, is a deliberate attempt to subvert language and twist it to serve their purposes.

This is a fascinating dialectic in which, once the circular chain reaction starts, is - chicken-and-egg-like - and very difficult to discern the starting point.

To the naïve and uncritical mass consumer of this product of wholesale semantic distortion and intellectually-dishonest pap, such subversion of language results in confusion and, eventually, an acceptance that is borne of constant repetition by sundry “experts” and “veteran commentators”, who are invariably flagged as having authoritative knowledge the rest of us in the daily grind of rat-racing can never aspire to.

The news conference today in the US of Bush and Blair provided another example of this corruption of language. Asked whether he was not troubled by the perception in the MidEast that the actions of America in blindly supporting Israel would diminish its influence there, the Idiotic Master of the Universe sidestepped the question, and launched into a tirade about how the “terrorists” did not want the spread of “freedom and democracy” in the region.

Not surprisingly, Britain’s pitiful excuse for a puppy-dog, B-Lair, toed the line, as scripted for him by Bush’s neocon handlers. Bush was definitely wagging his Blair-tail - and wagging it as hard as he could. This is what happened, despite what you will hear from the BBC, CNN, Fox and Sky. The latter spun the news conference to the point where you would be forgiven for wondering whether even they were becoming dizzy.

Thus the mass-murder in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon becomes “the fight for freedom and democracy”; resistance becomes “terrorism”, while common sense is “appeasement”.

“Political chaos is connected with the decay of language.”

The spinners would like us to believe that the Israeli people are suffering and would like for the war to end as readwithcaution.jpgsoon as possible. This claim cannot be further from the truth. Another canard is that there is a “sizeable peace movement” in the Zionist entity.

It is partly true that some want this carnage to end. But the plain truth is that most are happy, in spite of all that is going on around their heads. The Israeli people want this fight, for the very simple reason that they believe it to be a sacrifice they have to make if they are to successfully seize and occupy Arab lands on the road to Zionism’s Greater Israel.

Even before the “retaliation” for the soldier-boy the Palestinian Hamas arrested for crimes against Palestine, a poll by an Israeli paper showed that 80 per cent or so of Israelis supported the assassination of democratically-elected Hamas leaders. Following their wishes, weeks later the Zionist state terrorists assassinated and arrested tens of Hamas elected legislators, after the soldier-boy’s arrest. A subsequent poll has revealed that the “long-suffering” Israelis are supporting their government to the hilt in their mass-murderous expedition.

This is not surprising when you consider the fact that the presumably leftwing “Labour” party went into coalition with Zionist, new war criminal Olmert. And that the defence minister directing operations in the massacre of innocent women and children is none other than the Stalin-lookalike Peretz. If this mass-murderer is leftwing, I am a Blair-like poodle of the moronic Bush!

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

warispeace.jpgThis affliction affects many in the West - and the western surrogate, Israel, that sits in the midst of the Arab World. The Israelis believe that it was wrong for Europe and Nazism to treat them as they did - but yet treat the local population in the region as they did not want to be treated. This is doublethink, if ever there was an instance of it.

The same goes for the neocons in America and Europe, who talk of freedom and democracy and human rights, but somehow, in a very precarious contortion, accept what is being meted out to the people of the MidEast as being in pursuit of something called “freedom and democracy“.

“Winston could not definitely remember a time when his country had not been at war.”

If Israelis are honest with themselves, they would, like Winston Smith in Orwell’s 1984, accept that they could not remember when they were not “at war” with the “despicable Arab animals”. It is a fact of life for them, thanks to the unceasing efforts of their Big Brothers, the mantle of whom Olmert has inherited from fat war criminal Sharon.

I would like to say more on this but will instead defer to the Israeli writer Oren Ben-Dor, writing in the London Independent: “Israel is a state which, instead of defending its citizens, puts all of them, Jews as well as non-Jews, in danger…Provoking violence, consciously or unconsciously, against which one must defend oneself is a key feature of the victim-mentality. By perpetuating such a tragic cycle, Israel is a terrorist state like no other.

“To sustain that mentality and to preserve an impression of victimhood among outsiders, Israel must breed conditions for violence. Whenever prospects of violence against it subside, Israel must do its utmost to regenerate them: the myth that it is a peace-seeking victim which has ‘no partner for peace’ is a key panel in the screen with which Israel hides its primordial and continuing immorality.”

Similarly, the great western "democracies" of America and Britain have to maintain this convenient and perniciousperpetualwar.jpg fiction of “perpetual war”, in order to justify the militarization of society and the erosion of hard-won civil and human rights. This is 1984, and it is a sad reflection on the presumably “enlightened” people of these countries that they allow themselves to be thus sleepwalked into this perversion of “freedom and democracy”.

I will conclude as I started, with a quote from Bob‘s Redemption Song:

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds!”
